Former cast members of BBC One’s hit school-based drama Waterloo Road are being re-united for a new online and red-button spin-off which finds out what their characters have been up to since leaving school.
The six-part Waterloo Road Reunited reunites audience favourites Paul (Thomas Milner), Aleesha (Lauren Thomas), Philip (Dean Smith), Michaela (Zaraah Abrahams), Bolton (Tachia Newell), Danielle (Lucy Dixon), and Janeece (Chelsee Healey) for the first time since they left school last summer.
Produced for the BBC by Shed Media Scotland, the series launches on March 2nd with episodes being available via the red button following each episode of the National Television Award winning Waterloo Road. Episodes will also be available to watch via the BBC Waterloo Road webpage bbc.co.uk/waterlooroadreunited
Eileen Gallagher, CEO, Shed Productions said: “Waterloo Road – having just won best drama in the National Television Awards thanks to our fans – is one of our biggest brands and we are thrilled that the BBC has decided to take the series online and via the red button service.”
The new spin-off uses a combination of scripted episodes, fictional social media networks, audio and interactive fan sites and producers are hoping it’ll emulate the success of the parent show which has the highest share of 16-34 year olds of any BBC One or ITV 1 drama.
Margaret Scott, head of business development for Shed Media Scotland, says, “We are delighted the BBC appreciates the increasing appetite for extended content by young people and the growth of social networking and streamed content to mobile devices and online platforms.
“Fans of Waterloo Road are prolific users of the web as activity on BBC iPlayer, Waterloo Road website, many Facebook fan sites and Twitter testify. Waterloo Road Reunited is a natural extension designed to sate this appetite. Shed Media Scotland aims to be at the forefront of developing and producing engaging and entertaining content that taps into and exploits these emerging trends.”
