Since Epic announced the Fortnite World Cup and the unbelievable prize pools, everyone got excited about it. The qualifiers for the Fortnite World Cup started in April and players earned points in two modes either singles or duos.
Only those with the highest total points were invited to compete for the first prize of $3 million as well as the trophy representing the best players in the world.
Players or teams competed in six matches and based on their play and eliminations they gathered points at the end of the match. The player or team with most points was crowned Fortnite World Cup champions. The prize was exactly the same for solo or duos, so teams will have to split the $3 million.
Over 40 million players participated in the qualifying for this tournament from all around the world. From all the qualifiers only the best 50 duos and 100 solo players got the chance to compete on the tournament. There were famous players like Tfue, Vivid, Bizzle competing in the tournament, but the surprise came when Ninja, which is famous Fortnite streamer failed to even qualify for the tournament.
The total amount of the prize pool for competing players got up to $30 million and Epic also included some rewards for all people no matter where you place on the board. For each match, players can boost their earnings as they go on to another phase of the tournament. Seems like you do not need to be the NFL MVP of 2019 or a football player in Real Madrid or Juventus to be a millionaire anymore. eSports seem to finally be paying off to participants and leveling with mainstream sports.
Fortnite also included some rewards for the people watching the tournament, such as rare cosmetics. All you had to do is watch the event for at least 20 minutes to receive the World Cup Spray and Red Line Wrap. More than 2 million people watched the finals on Twitch, Youtube, Mixer and etc. which is an incredible number. Additionally, Epic decided to give Fishstick skin for players who would log in to Fortnite from July 25 to 28.
This game has become a phenomenon. Ever since its release, people liked it and the growth continued through the years. This free game generated billions of dollars for the developer Epic Games, which is why they decided to give away so much money on the tournament.
This Saturday was the big day for the tournament as they got into the finals and the most important match was the solo championship. Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf is one of the players who qualified throughout the smaller tournaments and it became the best Fortnite player in the world winning $3 million.
Kyle started the day with incredible playing winning the first of six games. In the next five games, he continued with the same pace, eliminating many players which gave him the big lead. He kept the strong play throughout the day and after the players came to the last game, Kyle had built up big point lead which was practically impossible for him to lose. He was crowned champion of the Fortnite solo tournament lifting the gold bus trophy and going home with $3 million.
Saturday was also a day for duos in which the European team of Emil “Nyhrox” Bergquist Pedersen and David “Aqua” W. were brilliant. They also had to compete against other 50 teams over six games, gathering points for each elimination or strong play. As we mentioned, they also received a prize of $3 million which they will have to split.
There are plenty of game tournaments organized nowadays such as Madden NFL, CS: GO, Dota, League of Legends and much more. Since games are becoming so popular, who knows what the next big thing will be. However, Fortnite does not seem like it would fade that easily from the gaming history, and will continue to grow even more.
