Production has started on a second 4-part series of Endeavour, ITV’s Inspector Morse prequel.

Shaun Evans returns as the young Morse, with Roger Allam as his superior Detective Inspector Fred Thursday.

The pair are joined by series regulars Anton Lesser, James Bradshaw, Jack Laskey, Shaun Rigby and Abigail Thaw.

Endeavour is written by former Morse contributor Russell Lewis and produced for ITV by Mammoth Screen. Morse creator Colin Dexter also returns as consultant to the producers.

Trove, the first story in the new series, is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm (The Killing).

A visiting beauty queen prepares to relinquish her throne. A father laments a missing daughter. Anglo-Saxon treasures are violated. And across the city, a detective returns to duty…

When an unknown man plummets to his death, the investigation brings Detective Constable Endeavour Morse back into action. The young detective unearths secrets in the very bowels of the university and far beyond the city. But he must act quickly, as the body count rises and doomsday beckons…

Writer Russell Lewis said: “1966 brings Endeavour a fresh quartet of baffling mysteries set to test his brain and body to breaking point.

“Though offset by the possibility of love unlooked for, against a backdrop of growing change in Britain and the wider world, Endeavour must face a challenge that threatens to take from him all he holds dear… Family.  Friends. Colleagues. The old order changeth… but not without a fight.  To the death.”
