Downton Abbey’s Charles Edwards has been cast in a new sitcom about the contemporary court of Henry IX, King of the United Kingdom.
Written by comedy legends Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais for UKTV’s Gold, Henry IX also stars Sally Phillips, Annette Crosbie, Colin Salmon, Don Warrington, Pippa Haywood, Gina Bellman and Robert Portal.
Edwards (Downton Abbey, Holy Flying Circus) plays Henry in a modern story of a forty-something man going through a mid-life crisis – except in this instance he’s the King of Great Britain and the Commonwealth.
At his side are aloof wife Queen Katerina (Phillips), King Mother Charlotte (Crosby) and Prime Minister Gwen Oxlade (Haywood).
Henry IX starts filming today and will air on Gold next year.
