Filming has commenced on the third and final series of Ashes To Ashes with producers promising a “compelling” finale which will finally reveal Gene Hunt’s secrets and answer the question: ‘Does anything tie Alex Drake and Sam Tyler together?’
The spin-off from Life on Mars may have had a bumpy reception with critics but fans have lapped up Alex Drake’s 80’s based encounters with Gene (Philip Glenister) and his team.
The series picks up having to resolve a cliff-hanger which left Alex (Keeley Hawes) lying shot on a hospital gurney and writers Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah are promising fans “a fabulous finale” according to Executive Producer Jane Featherstone.
Pharoah, who also co-created and executive produces the show, said he and Graham “have loved writing the adventures of Gene, Alex and the rest of the team and will be really sad to finally have to say goodbye to characters that have become a great part of our lives.”
Returning alongside Gene and Alex are DI Ray Carling (Dean Andrews), DC Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster) and WPC Sharon ‘Shaz’ Granger (Montserrat Lombard).
Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, said “We’ll be sad to see Gene and the gang go but the journey that will take us to that finale will be one of the most exciting, compelling and edge-of-your seat rides on TV!”
