Kobo’s iOS app loses ‘buy’ option

iPad and iPhone users who buy books from Kobo will no longer be able to purchase titles from within the app as Kobo becomes the latest retailer to fall into line with Apple’s new sales rules.

Earlier this year Apple announced it would no longer approve apps which redirected sales out of the app and into the devices’s web browser unless the app also allowed in-app purchasing via iTunes.

Retailers complained that the 30% fee levied by Apple on such sales accounted for the majority of their commission from book publishers.

The new rules have already seen the company behind the iFlow reader app close.

In a blog post, Kobo said iOS users “wishing to access their Kobo account, browse the Kobo Store and purchase books will now need to go to kobo.com” and urged users to contact Apple about the changes.

Despite the loss of its in-app store, Kobo promises it will continue to develop its iPad app.
