Sid Meier’s Pirates! – release date confirmed

August 27, 2010 - Staff@seenituk

Classic game elements such as fencing are present in the new Wii edition
As we reported all the way back in May, Sid Meier’s classic Pirates! game, originally released for home computers in the 1980′s and subsequently revived for the Amiga’s long gone CD32 system before arriving on modern consoles in 2004, is set for an enhanced Wii release later this year.

Publishers 2K Games have now confirmed the magic date as October 8th, just in time for the season games buying spree.

As in previous versions, the game places players in the 17th century Caribbean where they can take part in sea and land battles while amassing a fortune in plunder and taking part in a quest to save their family from the evil Marquis de la Montalban.

“We are big fans of the Wii and think Pirates! is the perfect game to bring to that platform,” said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games, and designer of the Sid Meier’s Pirates! series. “We’re sure Wii fans will enjoy the timeless adventure of being a pirate captain on the high seas as much as all of our other fans have!”

The Wii version of the game will see would-be swashbucklers take the helm one of 27 fully customisable ships as they descend upon unsuspecting ports of call to assemble a motley crew of seafaring bandits.

As well as the traditional mini-games from the classic original such as Sword Fighting, Ship Combat and Dancing, the Wii edition includes two exclusive mini-games – Bombardment and Lock Picking as well as character and ship customisation options.
