The BBC has been nominated for the largest number of accolades in this year’s Philips British Academy Television Awards with BBC One alone nominated 24 times. In total the corporation has received 51 nominations, more than all rival broadcasters combined.
Seenit.co.uk favourites Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch are both in the frame for the Leading Actor gong for their performances in Doctor Who and Sherlock respectively. Jim Broadbent and Daniel Rigby are also up for the award.
Steven Moffat’s Sherlock is also up for the Best Drama Series award which is also being contested by BBC Three’s Being Human, E4’s Misfits and ITV’s Downtown Abbey.
In addition to the winners chosen by the judging panel, viewers will also also have the opportunity to select the winner of the YouTube Audience Award for the most popular programme of the last year.
Up for the audience award are rare example of decent ITV drama Downton Abbey, hit comedy Miranda, The Killing, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, ITV Chav-fest The Only Way is Essex and Moffat’s acclaimed Sherlock.
Voting for the audience award is now open and closes on Friday May 20th, the result will be announced during the main awards ceremony on 22 May 2011. To cast your vote visit www.youtube.com/baftaonline.
The ceremony will be hosted by Graham Norton and broadcast on BBC One.
