Amazon hires BT Sport to produce Premier League coverage

Amazon’s decision to hire BT Sport to produce its Premier League coverage has been hailed as “a strong endorsement” of the broadcaster’s capabilities.

Last year the streaming service won the rights to 20 matches per season in the League’s troubled auction process which initially left it with two packages of unsold rights.

Amazon has previously said that Prime Video subscribers will be able to enjoy its coverage of the first December midweek round and the Boxing Day round at no extra cost and today confirmed that coverage of the matches would be handled by BT Sport and its football partner, Sunset+Vine.

Analyst Paolo Pescatore from PP Foresight said today’s announcement was “a smart move” from Amazon which would allow it to deliver the “top quality professional produced football” which fans are accustomed to.

He added that the deal was also “a strong endorsement for BT Sport’s capabilities,” and would provide the ISP and broadcaster with “another revenue stream by leveraging its facilities and vast pedigree in bringing innovation to sports fans.”

“The novel features that BT Sport has brought to the UK sports broadcasting market has set the benchmark extremely high for rivals. Encouragingly, this represents a new phase of growth in the evolution of BT Sport.”
