Eddie Izzard fans are in for a treat this Christmas with the DVD release of Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story, a documentary which explores the comic’s life and work through interviews, Izzard family home movies and clips from some of his acclaimed past tours.
The documentary recounts Eddie’s time and school and university, sees him revisit a childhood home on Northern Ireland, explores his transvestitism and recalls clearly painful TV claims that Izzard was recycling material.
All this is done against the backdrop of him preparing for his 2003 show SEXIE and includes contributions from Izzard’s agent, Robin Williams, documentary director Sarah Townsend and Eddie’s dad.
In an age where the most minor of minor celebrities rush to hide behind fake tans, aggressive PR and shallow anecdotes, this is an honest, painful, funny and personal look into the world of one of Britain’s funniest comedians.
When Izzard cries during his comments about hoping his deceased mother could come back it’s clear that this isn’t one of those ‘Billy Flynn’ induced moments so many lesser talented performers hide behind.
No fan’s collection will be complete without this essential addition. If Santa doesn’t bring a copy be sure to order your own with those tokens Aunt Maude sends you.
