Black Panther actress Letitia Wright was named the EE Rising Star of 2019 at last night’s BAFTA Film Awards.
The actress beat Jessie Buckley, Cynthia Erivo, Barry Keoghan and Lakeith Stanfield to take the accolade which was created in honour of the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director Mary Selway and is decided by a vote of the public and which recognises “outstanding up and coming acting talent”.
Wright is currently starring on London’s West End in The Convert at The Young Vic Theatre and it set to join John Boyega in Mike Cahill’s adaptation of the Katie Khan novel Hold Back the Stars.
She’s also due to lead the cast of John Legend’s Le Brio, a remake of 2017 French comedy‐drama.
In an emotional speech the actress spoke of the importance of God in her life and career.

Hosted by Joanna Lumley, the ceremony also saw Olivia Colman receive the BAFTA for Leading Actress for her role in The Favourite, with co-star Rachel Weisz taking Supporting Actress the film was also named Outstanding British Film as well as taking the BAFTAs for Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design and Make Up & Hair.
Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma took the gongs forBest Film, Director, Film Not in the English Language and Cinematography and Rami Malik won Leading Actor for his performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, which also won the award for Sound.
The ceremony closed with HRH The Duke of Cambridge, President of BAFTA, and Cate Blanchett presenting acclaimed film editor and Thelma Schoonmaker with The Fellowship, the highest honour the Academy can bestow.
