Blackberry has confirmed its upcoming software update will allow its handsets to install apps designed for Android phones from the Amazon Appstore.
Expected to launch later this year, BlackBerry 10.3 will let users install thousands of the most popular apps and games including Netflix, Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga and Minecraft.
In all, the Amazon Appstore offers more than 240,000 Android applications.
The update will significantly increase the number of apps available to Blackberry users after the firm’s own app store failed to attract major brands and developers,
BlackBerry and Amazon will work with existing BlackBerry app developers to help them migrate their apps to the Amazon Appstore.
“Making the Amazon Appstore available on BlackBerry 10 devices will help BlackBerry continue to meet two essential needs: greater app availability for our smartphone users and enhanced productivity solutions for enterprises,” said BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen.
“We’ve listened to our customers and have taken this important step to deliver on their needs, while executing on our strategy.”
