Maxine Peake, Matt Lucas and John Hannah are to headline an all-star adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Airing on BBC One next year, the classic play is being adapted by Doctor Who and Cucumber writer Russell T Davies and also stars Elaine Paige, Richard Wilson, Bernard Cribbins, Eleanor Matsuura and Hiran Abeysekera.

Davies says: “This is such an exciting range of actors from stage and screen, from wild comedy to high drama, and some making their first ever appearance on camera. The Dream is coming to life like never before.”

BBC bosses promise the 90-minute drama “will be for everyone” with plenty of laughs and thrills for families who will be “united in front of the television”.

Filming will commence in Roath Lock, Cardiff, in October for transmission in 2016 as part of BBC’s Shakespeare Season.
