Apple’s third generation iPad went on sale at stores and resellers across the UK today.

The nation’s four biggest mobile networks are also offering the device, alongside a 24-month data plan contract.

Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the latest iPad earlier this month, announcing a major upgrade to the device’s screen.

Dropping the numbering of the iPad 2, the new iPad features a retina display similar to that in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s and which will deliver four times the number of pixels of iPad 2.

Apple says the new screen is “so dense that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels when held at a normal distance, making web pages, text, images and video look incredibly sharp and realistic.”

“The new iPad redefines the category Apple created less than two years ago, delivering the most amazing experience people have ever had with technology,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“The new iPad now has the highest resolution display ever seen on a mobile device with 3.1 million pixels, delivering razor sharp text and unbelievable detail in photos and videos.”

The new model is powered by an A5X chip with quad-core graphics and is available in the same 16GB, 32GB and 63GB versions as before.

The existing iPad 2 will continue to be sold at £329 for the WiFi only version and £429 for the 3G variant.
