freeview_play_720LG has become the latest TV maker to back the new internet connected Freeview Play service which combines broadcast TV with on-demand content from BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5.

The service competes against YouView and Freesat’s Freetime which also offer integrated access to the UK’s most popular catch-up services.

LG will launch its first Freeview Play enabled TVs in the first half of 2016.

Other device makers to back the venture include Panasonic, Humax and Vestel.

Andrew Mackay, COO LG Electronics UK and Nordics, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Freeview Play as it enables LG to offer customers the best content, the best user experience and the best displays, culminating in a supreme overall viewing experience.”

Guy North, Managing Director of Freeview, commented: “We believe that Freeview Play is set to be the new normal way of watching TV and I’m really pleased to welcome LG on board as a partner.”
