Sony says the PlayStation 4 is its fastest selling console ever, having reached the 20m sales mark faster than any of its predecessors.
Launched at the end of 2013, the PS4 quickly started outselling it’s rival, Microsoft’s Xbox One thanks to a lower price and an ad campaign that focused on gaming.
By contrast, Microsoft’s advertising highlighted the Xbox One’s hoped-for role as a wider entertainment device intended for music and film streaming.
Microsoft’s to bundle the Kinect controller with its console helped push the price up way above its Japanese rival which soon took the lead in sales.
Sony says more than 20.2 million units were sold worldwide as of March 1 and that demand remains strong.
“We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system’s deep social capabilities.”
