Sony unveils new eBook reader

Sony has announced a new touchscreen eBook reader as the company seeks to take on the latest models from Amazon, Kobo and Barnes & Noble.

Now available in the US, the Reader PRS-T2 sells for $129.99, the same price as Sony’s previous model, and features a 6” Pearl e-ink screen.

Available in three colours – white, red or matte black – the PRS-T2 supports books sold in the ePub format protected by Adobe DRM.

Sony says battery life is 2 months with WiFi switched off and weaders can swipe a finger to turn a page, zoom in and out by pinching fingers together or apart or write notes on the page or highlight text with a finger or the supplied stylus.

The device also includes new Facebook integration, allowing readers to post a short passage from books purchased from the tied Reader Store to the social network site.

As part of Sony’s collaboration with Pottermore and the Pottermore Shop, the exclusive home of the Harry Potter eBooks, the company will give customers of the matte black model a voucher to redeem against the first eBook in the Harry Potter series.
