The Revenant takes top gongs at BAFTA film awards

dicaprio_baftaLeonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant dominated this year’s BAFTA film awards with the film’s leading man taking the Best Actor gong while the movie was named Best Film and Alejandro G Inarritu scooping the Best Director award.

The film also won best Cinematography, the fourth win for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and Best Sound.

The second most decorated film was Mad Max: Fury Road which took the best Costume Design, Production Design, Make Up & Hair and Editing awards.

Ceremony host Stephen Fry was joined by an audience which included top Hollywood names, including DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Steven Spielberg, alongside home-grown talent Dame Maggie Smith, Kate Winslet, Ridley Scott, Idris Elba and Star Wars actor John Boyega.

Brie Larson took the Best Actress award for her portrayal of a young mother held captive in Room while Winslet was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steve Jobs.

Director Steven Spielberg made his first BAFTA appearance for more than 20 years to accept the Best Supporting Actor BAFTA on behalf of Mark Rylance.
Boyega’s role as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens helped him win the EE Rising Star Award, the only BAFTA awarded by the British public. The long-awaited Star Wars sequel also won the Special Visual Effects award. Two special accolades were also awarded. Angels Costumes, the world’s longest-established and largest professional costume house, was rewarded for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema while Sir Sidney Poitier received the Fellowship. Poor health prevented Sir Sidney from attending the London ceremony so his award was instead presented by to him by Jamie Foxx and his daughter, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, in his Los Angeles home. Poitier’s 60 year career has included some of Hollywoods most iconic films, including In The Heat of the Night and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Tributes were paid to the acting legend by Oprah Winfrey, Noel Clarke and his To Sir, With Love co-star, Lulu. 2015 NOMINATIONS AND WINNERS (presented in 2016) ee_capture_cam FELLOWSHIP SIR SIDNEY POITIER OUTSTANDING BRITISH CONTRIBUTION TO CINEMA ANGELS COSTUMES BEST FILM THE BIG SHORT Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Brad Pitt BRIDGE OF SPIES Kristie Macosko Krieger, Marc Platt, Steven Spielberg CAROL Elizabeth Karlsen, Christine Vachon, Stephen Woolley *THE REVENANT Steve Golin, Alejandro G.
