The Summit

Nick Ryan’s The Summit is a powerful documentary feature exploring the deaths of 11 mountain climbers attempting to reach the summit of K2 in August 2008.

Ryan fuses footage from the expedition teams, home movies, interviews and recreations to tell the stories of those who died, working to provide the audience with a neutral view on an issue which remains controversial.

At the centre of this film is Ger McDonnell, much respected among his fellow climbers and one of the 11 who failed to return from the mountain.

The interviews with, and archive footage of, McDonnell’s family ensure that no-one can underestimate the scale of loss for all concerned.

The Summit is showing as part of the 56th BFI London Film Festival. Visit bfi.org.uk/lff for screening details and booking info.
