At Eternity’s Gate, Director Julian Schnabel’s acclaimed film about Vincent van Gogh’s final years is now available to rent on rental platforms including Prime Video, Rakuten.tv, Sky Store and BT TV, alongside Curzon Home Cinema.
During a self-imposed exile in Arles and Auvers-Sur-Oise, France, van Gogh develops his unique, colorful style of painting.
While grappling with religion, mental illness and a tumultuous friendship with French artist Paul Gauguin, the painter begins to focus on his relationship with eternity rather than the pain his art causes him in the present.
Willem Dafoe as van Gogh, with Rupert Friend, Oscar Isaac, Mads Mikkelsen, Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner and Niels Arestrup and the 38 day shoot included locations across France where Van Gogh resided during his final years.
The film is the latest in a line of cinematic portrayals of van Gogh and follows the 2010 docudrama Van Gogh – Painted With Words in which Benedict Cumberbatch portrays him to perfection, with every single word of dialogue sourced from the artist’s original correspondence, and Loving Vincent, the 2017 experimental animated film.
Less serious depictions have included the 2010 Doctor Who story Vincent and the Doctor, appearances in at least two video games, including the 2009 Nintendo DS title Art Academy, plus, (h/t https://www.pokiepop.com/en) even a van Gough themed slot game! (other online casinos are available).
