Online retailer Amazon has confirmed UK customers will be able to buy two new versions of its Kindle eBook reader from the UK site as of August 27th.
The new Kindle has a 6″ e-ink screen which the retailer claims offers “50 percent better contrast than any other e-reader” and is both smaller and lighter than previous models.
A 3G version, which also has WiFi, will retail for £149 while a new WiFi only model will be available for £109.
The two new models are the first to be offered by the UK site, previously customers had to import the Kindle from the US site.
UK customers will also be able to buy books from a new UK version of the Kindle store. Amazon says the new store will offer “the biggest selection and lowest prices of any e-bookstore in the U.K.”
Books bought through the store can also be read on mobile devices such as the iPad and Android-based phones via Kindle apps.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder & CEO, said readers would “do a double take when they see Kindle’s bright new screen and feel how remarkably light the smaller 8.7 ounce design feels in one hand”.
Earlier this month Amazon said it was selling 180 Kindle books for every 100 hardback books it sold, although it did not say how many of either format it had sold.
Both new Kindle models are available to pre-order from Amazon.co.uk
