The next version of iOS, the operating system used by Apple’s iPhone and iPad, will bring a “significant” change to the platform’s look and feel according to reports.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber says IOS 7 will be a “significant system-wide UI overhaul”, breaking with the look of past versions.

Although new features have been added, the design of iOS has remained almost constant since it first debuted on the iPod Touch in June 2007.

However rival platforms, including Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone have undergone radical transformations in recent years.

Industry watchers expect Apple to refresh iOS in order to keep up rivals.
