The BBC has tonight denied reports that Matt Smith has quit Doctor Who.

Saturday’s Daily Mirror claims ‘Matt calls time on Time Lord’.

The paper goes on sale just hours before Smith returns to BBC One to take on an army of Daleks.

However on Twitter members of the BBC comms team denied the story, insisting the actor merely “says in an interview that he won’t be the Doctor forever” and insisting he “hasn’t quit”.

The new series will see the departures of companions Amy and Rory, played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

Smith is the third actor to play the role since the series was revived in 2005.
