The BBC’s commercial arm has rights to the scripts for the US adaptation of The Office, allowing it to offer international broadcasters plots for up to 192 episodes.

As well as completed programmes such as Doctor Who and Call the Midwife, BBC Worldwide also generates money by selling formats to overseas broadcasters.

The Office is one of Worldwide’s most popular exports and the deal with NBC Universal allows it to boost the number of scripts available from the original 14 UK episodes to 192.

Nicki McDermott Head of Format Acquisitions at BBC Worldwide said “We are thrilled to be offering more scripts to the US version of The Office to broadcasters around the world.

“The series has kept audiences, certainly in America, entertained for over a decade and this access to more episodes means International broadcasters now have more storylines to play with when adapting locally.”
