Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is to be the first guest host in the latest series of Have I Got News For You when the topical news quiz returns later this month.

It’s also recently been announced that Cumberbatch, who received rave reviews for his performance in Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s modern retelling of the legendary detective’s adventures, is to star in the movie version of John Le Carré’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Cumberbatch said he was “very excited and honoured” to be guest presenting the BBC One quiz, adding: “I have watched the show since its inception, and my family and I used to make it a routine TV date to relish. How could I resist the chance for the audience to witness my being shot down in flames by the wit of Merton and Hislop?”

Other guest presenters this series include Chris Addison, Alexander Armstrong and Martin Clunes.

BBC One, Thursday 14th October
