BT has updated its ‘buy to own’ movie service to let customers watch purchases on their smartphones and tablets.
In February the firm became the first UK pay-TV firm to let customers buy films, including the latest Hollywood releases, direct from their set top boxes.
Purchases are charged to the customer’s phone and broadband bill and can be streamed to their set top box as many times as they like without counting towards any bandwidth limits.
BT has now moved to boost the service’s appeal by making it possible for films to be watched outside the home via dedicated apps for Android and iOS devices.
Streaming via the app is restricted to users within the UK, although those travelling abroad or simply wanting to ensure buffer-free viewing, can download films to their device for off-line viewing.
According to BT’s help pages, up to four mobile devices can be authorised per account, although each film can only be downloaded onto a single device at a time.
Downloaded films will remain available even if a customer leaves BT, although former customers will be unable re-download content if they change devices.
