BT reveals future TV and mobile plans

bt_g4_youview_remoteBT says it will launch a new “entry level” YouView box and multi-room service in the coming months.

The company also intends to add new channels to its BT TV service and add more third party content.

It already offers 20 subscription channels, including SyFy and Fox, as well as a HD add-on pack and video on demand packages.

News of BT’s future TV plans is contained in a presentation accompanying its latest market update which confirms that the BBC’s Connected Red Button is expected to be added to YouView boxes shortly.

YouView CEO Richard Halton previously indicated the internet-powered replacement for the current generation of Red Button service could launch in time the BBC’s ‘summer of sport’.

The document also confirms BT is planning to launch a consumer mobile service later this year or early next.

Speculation about BT’s plans in this are have been growing ever since it won 4G spectrum.

The presentation says the mobile voice and data service will combine BT’s fibre broadband and WiFi networks with its 4G spectrum to offer an “always best connected” customer experience.

An early version of the service aimed at business users will be launched “in the coming weeks”.
