Call of Duty: Top moments from the franchise

One game that had its roots in the PC back in 2003 is now fully established as one of the biggest and most successful franchises across the full range of platforms.

Ghosts is the latest title in the long running series Call of Duty available online at GAME and Amazon, but each previous version has highlights which have contributed to its overall mega-success.

Here are some of the top moments (spoiler warnings!):

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Nuclear death/Aftermath
With cinematic realism being the aim for all top quality game experiences, one of the most talked about gaming moments is the surprise that comes at the end of the apparently successful Shock and Awe mission. As Sgt Jackson crawls from the wreckage of the downed chopper the emotions that the scene manages to evoke in the player are so powerful that they aren’t washed away as the screen whites out.

Modern Warfare 2
Betrayal by General Shepherd/Loose Ends
The moment General Shepherd is revealed as one of the bad guys is as much of a plot shocker as any well written film blockbuster. It’s also one of those moments where you realise that a ‘game’ can be a fully immersive experience. You survived the mission but get hit with a sucker punch in the brutal method of the betrayal itself as Shepherd shoots Ghost and Roach point-blank.

Modern Warfare 3
Surfacing at New York Harbour/Hunter Killer
Black Tuesday is the opening Modern Warfare 3 mission and the fiery pace of the run through the devastated financial district of New York looks like it will set the tone for the whole package. In fact The Hunter Killer mission follows and shifts everything down a gear before surfacing to an image of the city that shows World War 3 has really started.

Modern Warfare 3
Hijacked plane sequence/Turbulence
Modern Warfare’s airplane-based bonus mission Mile High Club was a firm favourite with many fans, but version 3’s Turbulence took things to a totally different level by adding in-flight zero gravity fire fights and one of the best crash landings ever.

Call of Duty 3
Clearing Nazs from the woods/The Forest
Perhaps one of the best set pieces of all, the different aspects of fighting in The Forest means that tensions rise from the relative quiet and calm of sniping through trenches to wide-open spaces battle and culminating in some mega-mortar action.
