The BBC has released the first official picture of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who costume.

The actor started filming his first two episodes earlier this month week and to mark the occasion the BBC released an image of him wearing predecessor Matt Smith’s costume.

Since then eager fans watching the show’s filming have been posting pictures and videos on social media sites, including some of Capaldi in a nightdress.

BBC bosses have ensured that the world’s first sight of the new Doctor’s outfit was in an official picture by Tweeting it from the show’s official account.

The Thick of It star was unveiled as the new Doctor in August in a live TV special which drew 6.9m UK viewers and more than 1.5m international fans.

He has since made a brief cameo in the 50th Anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, before being seen at the end of the Christmas episode.

This weekend the actor will be seen as Cardinal Richelieu in BBC One’s The Musketeers. It’s been reported that his casting as The Doctor will prevent Capaldi from appearing in a second series of the Alexandre Dumas-inspired drama.

Capaldi’s Doctor will be accompanied by companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, who also appeared alongside Smith.

His first Doctor Who episode is expected to air in late August.
