The resurgence of iconic British horror studio Hammer continues with a new range of horror novels released by Random House under the Hammer imprint.
The first title is The Greatcoat, “a terrifyingly atmospheric ghost story” from author Helen Dunmore.
Other titles from Jeanette Winterson, Melvin Burgess and Tim Lebbon will follow later this year.
The Greatcoat takes place in 1954 in the Yorkshire town of East Riding.
Newlyweds Isabel and Philip Carey have moved to the village following their marriage.
A GP, Philip spends much of his time at work, leaving alone and Isabel trying hard to adjust to the realities of married life. One cold winter night while Philip is out on call, Isabel finds an old RAF greatcoat in the back of a cupboard that she uses to help keep warm.
Wrapped in the coat she sleeps and is beset by dreams. She wakes to hear a knock at her window.
Outside is Alex, a young RAF pilot, waiting to come in. His powerful presence both disturbs and excites her. Her initial alarm soon fades, and they begin an intense affair. But nothing has prepared her for the truth about Alec’s life, nor the impact it will have on hers …
