Mobee Magic Charger for Apple Magic Mouse

August 20, 2012 - Martin Hoscik@seenituk

While Apple’s Magic Mouse is a great looking product which helped popularise desktop touch computing, it’s also very battery hungry.

Apple’s failure to provide a charger cradle means you can’t top-up the mouse’s batteries and while keeping a few spare AA batteries around isn’t the biggest of hardships, having to swap them part-way through a work project can be an annoyance.

Step forward the Mobee Magic Charger for Apple Magic Mouse which replaces the standard AA batteries with a single rechargeable battery pack that fits into the mouse’s battery slot.

With the rechargeable battery pack in place, the mouse can be charged via an inductive charging plate which plugs into one of your Mac’s USB ports. Placing the mouse on top of the plate automatically charges the battery pack.

There are no drivers or additional software to be installed, once the battery pack is installed and charged you’re good to go.

Our retail unit came part-charged which meant we didn’t need to wait for an initial charge to complete before we could get on with using it.

Mobee says a single charge can last up to 6 days but, as with all battery life claims, this should be weighed against real-life usage.

How long your battery actually lasts depends on how much you use it during a day, how long you work for and whether you get into the habit of placing it on the charger plate when you’re not using it or have finished for the day.

I got around 5 days of heavy usage from a single charge but my default behaviour is to top-up between charges and having the option to do so and avoid swapping batteries is the biggest reason for buying the Mobee.

The Mobee Magic Charger has been designed to fit in with overall look of the Apple Magic Mouse, ensuring it won’t clash with your existing kit and has a nice, robust feel to it.

With the battery pack installed the Magic Mouse was lighter than with Apple’s own rechargeable AA batteries, reducing its ‘drag’ and making for a more comfortable use.

If endlessly changing batteries is beginning to take the shine off of your Magic Mouse then the Mobee Magic Charger is a must-have purchase.
