Users already logged into their Facebook page were presented only with a ‘Sign up using Facebook’ option.
Only those who do not use the social network, or who were not logged in, are offered the option to create an account using an email address and password instead.
By connecting with Facebook, customers gave Netflix permission to tell their friends which films they have rented.
However reports in the US say such a move would be illegal under the Video Privacy Protection Act.
MSNBC reports “The 1988 law makes it illegal for a video provider to share someone’s viewing history without written consent every time a video is watched and shared.”
A resolution overturning the ban is currently awaiting legislation to be passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Obama.
