Marvel has confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. is to reprise the role of Iron Man/Tony Stark in two new films.
It had been widely rumoured that Iron Man 3 would be Downey’s final appearance as the billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist who dons the metal suit to fight bad guys.
However the actor has now signed a two-picture agreement to return to the role in two Avengers sequels.
In a statement on its website, Marvel says Avengers will feature “favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen..”
The film is due to start production in March 2014 and is pencilled in for a May 1, 2015 release.
Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Iron Man 3 rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.
