Smiley defeats The Inbetweeners at the UK box office

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has taken the number one spot at the UK box office, ending a four week reign by comedy The Inbetweeners.

Tomas Alfredson’s big screen adaptation of John Le Carre’s classic spy thriller took £2.8m in during its opening weekend.

The film stars Gary Oldman take up the mantle of legendary British spy George Smiley who is brought out of retirement to find a mole at the very heart of the intelligence service.

The Inbetweeners, a spin-off from the successful Channel 4 TV series, slipped one place to hold the number two spot with £1.2m of ticket sales.

The film is the most successful comedy ever at the UK box office, taking over £42m since it was released last month.
