Spitfire’s 75th anniversary marked in new BBC 2 docu

September 8, 2011 - Staff@seenituk

Veteran BBC journalist John Sergeant celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Spitfire in a new BBC Two documentary due to air later this month.

Britain’s Flying Past is a new hour-long show in which Sergeant, a former RAF cadet, embarks on his own journey to discover what made the Spitfire such a special aircraft and one that 75 years on still stirs pride and emotion.

The programme charts the life of plane MH434 which was ‘born’ at the legendary Castle Bromwich factory and went on to carry out over 79 sorties across Europe.

Sergeant explores the extraordinary stories of ordinary people who feel they owe their lives to the Spitfire.

Britain’s Flying Past airs on BBC Two in late September.
