No superhero film is complete without an official tie-in game so it’s no great shock that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises has a mobile game version for you to enjoy.
The Dark Knight Rises game is available for Apple’s iOS (iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch) and Android devices.
This review is based on the iOS version which can be downloaded form the iTunes App Store .
For your £4.99 you get an impressive, high quality game that gives you free roaming around Gotham as well as the expected missions and side tasks. Skill points allow you to upgrade equipment and vehicles which are unlocked as you progress through the game.
The gameplay felt more fluid and quicker to learn than was the case in Batman Arkham City Lockdown. The Dark Knight Rises is addictive, you’ll find it hard to put down and when you come a cropper you’ll be unable to resist having ‘just one more go’.
Controls are pretty straightforward, you direct Batman via an onscreen joystick and carry out actions – fire grappling hook, punch the bad guy, jump – using icons.
As always, the earlier stages of the game guide you through actions but it’s soon up you to work out the best route and action to complete the missions.
The graphic and sound design are stunning and do the film and wider Batman brand proud.
Comparisons with the Grand Theft Auto series are well made and developers Gameloft deserve credit for creating an immersive and atmospheric game which players will find rewarding, rather than the sort of tied, cheap cash-in that often accompanies big budget films.
Our verdict: 4/5
