Third series of Inbetweeners draws record audience

E4's Inbetweeners returned for a third series last nightE4 bosses are celebrating today after the third series of hit sitcom The Inbetweeners attracted an average audience of 2.6m viewers – the channel’s highest ever audience and way above the second run’s average launch audience of 1.3m.

Previously the channel’s highest overnight rating was 2.4m viewers for an episode of US sitcom Friends.

Last night’s debut episode of the sitcom was the second most watched programme across all channels behind BBC One’s Ten O’clock News.

Nerys Evans, E4’s Commissioning Editor Comedy said the channel were “so delighted that Series 3 has kicked off with such a fantastic episode and in record breaking style too.”

Evans added: “It’s also great to know that the rest of the series is absolutely jam packed with comedy treats for The Inbetweeners fans to look forward to.”

In last night’s episode saw Simon and Will agree to model in a fashion show to impress the objects of their desire – with predictably disappointing results.

Paul Mortimer, Channel Manager E4 and More4, said: “Monday’s launch of The Inbetweeners delivered phenomenal ratings and was the best start to what is the biggest ever season on E4. With the return of Misfits, Hollyoaks Later and a dozen other new and returning premieres between now and Christmas, we aim to ensure that our audience of twenty-somethings is spoiled rotten with quality entertainment as the nights begin to draw in.”
