Sci-fi and fantasy publisher Tor is to open its own eBook store, allowing customers to buy direct rather then via middlemen such as Amazon and Apple.
Owned by Macmillan, Tor announced in April that its UK and US divisions would drop DRM from all titles later this year.
Announcing the new store, Tor’s Tom Doherty said: “This isn’t in lieu of the existing online retailers, but in addition to them.
“We think there’s room for all kinds of retail models in the growing e-book field—and we aim in particular to provide a rich, informative browsing experience to fans and devotees of the kinds of books Tor and Forge have made their reputations publishing.”
The store will open “in the summer” and will carry titles from the Tor, Forge, Starscape, Tor Teen, and Orb imprints, “along with, eventually, offerings from other publishers”.
