UK Android users get new eBook store

August 9, 2010 - Martin Hoscik@seenituk

The Android store is the first to use Mobcast's new operator billing platform
T-Mobile and Orange users in the UK can now buy eBooks straight from their Android-powered smart phones thanks to a new deal between the recently merged operators and mobile reading firm Mobcast.

The mobile brands are the first to deploy Mobcast’s latest digital book platform which allows operators to brand their own eBook and audiobook stores and bill the customer directly to their usual mobile bill.

Mobcast CEO Tony Lynch said: “After developing this platform for two years we know from our own customer data that they love reading books on their mobile phone and a large percentage go on to purchase multiple books per month.

“The majority of our revenue comes from repeat customers. The latest version of the Mobcast platform allows the operators to offer a full book shop experience to millions of their book loving customers.”

The company is planning further launches “with international retailers and operators” later in the year, and has plans to join the myriad of eBook retailers on Apple’s iPad and iPhone.
