Amazon announces ad-supported Kindle

US shoppers can now save themselves $25 off the price of Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader by agreeing to be fed adverts for special offers and sponsored screensavers on the device.

Available for $114 the ‘Kindle with Special Offers’ also includes ‘AdMash’ – an app and website where the online retailer hopes users will vote “for the most attractive sponsored screensavers.”

The device is technologically the same as the standard, non-ad carrying Kindle although it features an additional menu option to allow owners to view a full list of current special offers.

Offers available to consumers include cut-priced Amazon.com gift cards, deals on MP3 downloads and cheap audiobooks.

“We’re working hard to make sure that anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “Kindle with Special Offers is the same #1 bestselling Kindle – and it’s only $114. Kindle is the best deal in consumer electronics anywhere in the world.”

The ‘Kindle with Special Offers’ is available for customers in the U.S. to pre-order and will ship from May 3rd.
