Blackberry shares spike after Department of Defense announcement

Smartphone maker Blackberry received a welcome boost last week when the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed it would deploy around 80,000 of the firm’s devices on a new mobile platform for staff.

In recent years Blackberry has been squeezed by the success of Apple’s iPhone and handsets running Google’s Android operating system.

But, despite their success in the wider market, iOS and Android devices will account for just 1,800 of the devices provided to staff under the DOD’s new initiative.

News that Blackberry handsets would account for the bulk of devices saw the firm’s shares rise 8.2%.
