Netflix announces deal to show Gotham following TV debut

Netflix has snapped up the subscription on demand rights to Batman prequel, Gotham.

The series explores the origins of future police commissioner James Gordon as well as the villains which made the titular city famous.

Ben McKenzie plays Gordon with David Mazouz appearing as the young, orphaned Bruce Wayne and Sean Pertwee as Bruce’s butler Alfred.

As Gordon investigates the murder of Wayne’s parents he and the young billionaire develop a growing friendship.

The show also stars Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Cory Michael Smith as Riddler and Camren Bicondova as Catwoman.

UK viewers will be able to see Gotham first on Channel 5, with Netflix adding the series next year following its initial broadcast.

“Gotham is the most anticipated new series of the autumn season and we are thrilled to offer it to our members around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix.

“The Batman origins story is sure to have massive global appeal so it is fitting that, along with Warner Television, we have created a new model for distributing a show that international and domestic audiences will love.”
