Ofcom has opened a consultation on proposals to simplify switching mobile phone providers, making the new network responsible for ensuring the switch takes place smoothly.
The proposals mimic the regulator’s recent introduction of a similar system – known as ‘gaining provider led’ switching – for moving between phone and broadband providers.
Under such systems the customer no longer needs to contact their current provider to switch, potentially freeing them from hard-sales and delaying tactics when they’re determined to move.
The regulator is also considering considering simplifying the process customers who want to retain their existing number need to go through.
Sharon White, Ofcom Chief Executive, said: “Consumers should be able to switch their mobile providers with minimum hassle to take advantage of the best deals on the market.
“Ofcom has recently made switching easier for millions of broadband users, and we are now focusing on improving the process for mobile customers.”
The closing date for responses to the consultation, which can be found here, is 6 October 2015.
