Sky launches new European football channel

500px-Sky_Sports_logoSky is to launch a new sports channel dedicated to European football which will start broadcasting on August 12th.

Sky Sports 5 will show up to 600 live European football matches next season, including European Qualifiers for UEFA EURO 2016, the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Coppa Italia and Copa del Rey.

It will also show Holland’s Eredivisie top division which Sky has signed a 4-year deal for.

Sky says existing Sky Sports customers will get the new channel as part of their package, and can also also sign up to two years’ free Sky Broadband Unlimited.

The channel will be supported by an advertising campaign starring David Beckham.

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: “Sky Sports 5 takes our unrivalled live football coverage to the next level offering more European football than ever before.

“There’s never been a better time to be a Sky Sports customer and with two years’ free totally unlimited broadband, we offer the ultimate package for sports fans.”

The channel will lose the Champions League from the start of the 2015 season after rival BT Sport scooped up exclusive coverage of the contest in a £900m deal.
