As previously reported, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is releasing The Goonies on 4K Blu-ray later this month.
Directed by Richard Donner, this 1985 classic was written by Chris Columbus based on a story by Steven Spielberg and stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, Joe Pantoliano and Lupe Ontiveros.
The story sees a group of kids follow a mysterious treasure map into a spectacular underground realm of twisting passages, outrageous booby-traps and a long-lost pirate ship full of golden doubloons.
This 4K Blu-ray release features a host of extras including a commentary (with Hidden Video Treasures) by director Richard Donner and cast members, a making of The Goonies featurette, Cyndi Lauper “The Goonies ‘r’ Good Enough” music video, deleted scenes and the original theatrical trailer.
Legacy
The Goonies was a box office smash, taking almost $125m on a budget of $19m and has been preserved in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” due to its popularity.
The film spawned at least 3 video games, the first of which launched in 1985 for popular home computers and took inspiration from puzzles seen in the film, while 1987’s The Goonies II has little connection to the movie and features an original plot in which Mickey (played in the film by Sean Astin) must rescue his fellow Goonies.
Two further games inspired by the film have also been made. In 2007 Jeep sponsored the browser-based The Goonies: Return to Astoria in which the player must collect map pieces and doubloons, and more recently there’s been a tie-in online slots game. In addition, a Goonies pack including a Sloth minifigure and constructable Pirate Ship and Skeleton Organ, was released for Lego Dimensions.
Earlier this year it was announced that Fox was making a series in which a group of young filmmakers make a shot-for-shot remake of The Goonies.
The Goonies will be released on August 31st. Pre-order from Amazon.co.uk*
