The UK’s first 4G mobile data services will launch on 30 October, network operator EE has confirmed.
4G provides mobile data speeds far faster than existing 3G services.
Communications regulator Ofcom has allowed EE to use existing bandwidth to offer 4G while rivals must wait for additional capacity to be auctioned before they can launch services.
Some networks had expressed displeasure at what they saw as an unfair advantage being handed to EE, especially as it will initially be the only network able to provide 4G services to users of Apple’s new iPhone 5.
However talks between Government ministers, Ofcom and the networks has resulted in a speeded up auction process, shortening EE’s exclusivity period for 4G.
In a statement Olaf Swantee, CEO, EE, said: “We are delighted to announce that the official launch of our new customer brand, EE, offering the UK’s first superfast mobile 4G and fibre broadband service, will take place on the 30th October 2012.
“This is a significant milestone for the United Kingdom, and for the people and businesses of our country who will now be able to enjoy the huge advantages of superfast 4G technology for the first time. We are very proud to be pioneering, innovating and leading our industry in launching 4G for our nation through our new EE brand.”
