iPhone 4S pre-orders top 1 million

Apple says pre-orders of its new iPhone 4S mobile phone has exceeded 1 million in a single day, beating the pre-order record of 600,000 held by the previous generation iPhone 4.

Te new iPhone, unveiled last week, ncludes an 8MP camera, the Siri voice-powered assistant and a faster processor.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

Apple says the iPhone 4S will be available at all 33 UK Apple retail stores from at 8 a.m. on Friday, October 14.

On Wednesday Apple is expected to release the latest version of its iOS operating system, which introduces a raft of new features including iCloud and iMessaging, for previous iPhone and iPad models
