Sky has become the second UK pay-TV provider to offer subscribers the opportunity to buy films to keep through their set top box.
The satellite giant’s “Buy & Keep” service will launch just weeks after rival BT started offering film purchases to users of its YouView-based TV platform.
Movies on offer from Sky include The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Richard Curtis’ About Time and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Customers who buy a film will also receive a DVD copy “in the post a few days later.”
Like BT, Sky says customers will be to watch their purchases on tablets and smartphones within the next year and that TV box sets will be added to the store at a later date.
Nicola Bamford, Director of Sky Store said, “We know millions of people love to buy films and now it becomes even easier to do it straight from your sofa with Sky Store.
“The ability to now own a copy of your favourite film using ‘Buy & Keep’ is the perfect solution for any film fans wanting the immediacy of enjoying the latest movies on your main TV, with the added benefit of receiving the original DVD in the post.”
