EE further expands 5G standalone network

EE is extending the rollout of its 5G standalone network to more towns and cities across the UK.

Launched in September 2024, the network features a dedicated 5G core and is built on new, end-to-end 5G architecture which removes any reliance on older 4G equipment.

Its footprint has been gradually growing and the latest expansion will see it available to over 28 million people across 50 major towns and cities by the end of March 2025.

Coinciding with the rollout, EE is making 5G standalone available to all new and upgrading customers taking any EE handset plan from today.

Compatible handsets are available from multiple brands, including Apple, Samsung, Google, Motorola, Nokia, TCL and Honor.

Places set to benefit from the upgrade over the next few weeks include Altrincham, Blackburn, Bridgend, Corby, Cwmbran, Doncaster, Exeter, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Port Talbot, Sale, Sunderland and Wakefield.

EE has previously said the network offers “near uninterrupted outdoor coverage” and allows customers “to make calls and use data in areas where it wasn’t possible before while also enjoying some of the fastest available speeds on a mobile network.”

Malcolm Cubitt, Director of Mobile at EE, said: “5G standalone is giving many customers a better and more reliable mobile experience, especially in busy locations.

“As we rapidly expand our network footprint to cover more than 40 percent of the UK population, we are widening its accessibility so more people can benefit – especially those looking to harness the power of cutting-edge features on the newest smartphones.”
